Celebrate National Poetry Month with this reading by K. Brenna Wardell, who will be sharing from her new poetry and essay collection, Of Moose and Me: Animal Tales from an Alaskan Childhood.

In this evocative memoir, Wardell recalls her childhood in Alaska and her powerful interactions with the region’s diverse fauna, both tame and wild. Through a series of concise, vividly realized, and often humorous anecdotes, interspersed with poems that are at once lyrical and introspective, Wardell takes the reader on a journey across time to a place where the distinctions between the human and nonhuman are blurred by an icy Alaskan wind.

K. Brenna Wardell is a writer and teacher who grew up in Alaska. She has published poetry with several small presses, and her work has been presented at Teatro Milagro in Portland, Oregon, and the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez, Alaska. She has written for publications such as the Anchorage Daily News and the theatre magazine Callboard and workshopped her poetry at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She is currently an assistant professor at the University of North Alabama, where she teaches courses in film and literature.

Pompeii – City of Vesuvius: Presentations by UNA History Graduate StudentsImage may contain: sky, mountain and outdoor

Florence-Lauderdale Public Library

Pompeii and the cities destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius are a unique time capsule of life in Ancient Rome. Inspired by the first new excavations to take place in Pompeii in thirty years, the graduate students in the History Department at UNA completed a course on the archaeology of Pompeii in Fall 2018, in which they each completed an individual piece of research. The results of that research will be presented at this seminar. Combining both traditional and original research, the presentations cover an array of topics–from temples and goddesses to streets and graffiti–and reflect the uniqueness and diversity of ancient Pompeii.
