MUSCLE SHOALS-The Tennessee Valley Authority released its Annual Report, which includes information and highlights from fiscal year 2024 related to TVA’s employees, operations, financial strength, innovation, and partnerships.
In this report is information regarding the Power Service Shops, which are located in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and consist of a team of 300 experienced craftspeople, technicians, engineers and project managers. As TVA facilities age, equipment and parts can become hard to find or obsolete.
TVA is using 3D metal printing technology to help reduce the risk of supply chain issues through additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing creates parts by depositing material, building the piece one layer at a time. This is opposite of traditional manufacturing’s approach of cutting away material from a solid block to achieve the desired shape.
Since 1951, the TVA Power Service Shops have been a valuable resource in building and maintaining our generating fleet, and their vital role will continue in the future as TVA meets the energy needs of our growing region.
Here is some additional information about the Power Service Shops:
- Along with the work they perform in the shops, union craft personnel spring into action, mobilizing in as little as 12 hours when unexpected generation issues occur.
- The Power Service Shops are also investing in skilled trades personnel through local apprentice programs.
- TVA is investing $39.9 million to expand the Power Service Shops. The expansion will include a Pietro-Carnaghi vertical turning lathe, currently scheduled to be operational in 2025. This lathe will allow increased turning capacity to handle large components that are essential for the refurbishment of several TVA generating assets. This machine will be vital in the on-going hydroelectric life extension projects throughout the TVA service territory.
