Travis Howard Mitchell, 79, died on January 4, 2020 at his residence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was born December 23, 1941 in Belmont, MS to Archie and Vera Harris Mitchell. Travis attended First Baptist Church in Belmont in his youth and University Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA.

Travis was a graduate of the Belmont High School class of 1959. An avid MS State fan and supporter, he received his BS and M.Eng in Mechanical Engineering from State. Travis greatly valued education and thought that every child had a right to a quality education. He was also interested in children becoming good citizens. As a result of this belief he generously donated monetary gifts to Mississippi State, Belmont High School and First Baptist Church.

Highly respected for his engineering ability wherever he worked, his work history included the Ethyl Corporation, Baton Rouge Water Company, and the Shell Geismar Chemical Plant from which he retired. In his spare time he passionately collected and repaired many antique furniture pieces.

Graveside services will be on Monday, November 20 at 1:00 at the Belmont City Cemetery with Mike Deaton officiating. Deaton Funeral Home in Belmont, MS. is in charge of the arrangements.

Travis is survived by two sisters, Dolores Spencer of Baldwyn and Derita Elfstrum (Bob) of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. He is also survived by a niece, Kim Peters and nephews, Jeff Peters, Paul Ray Peters, Jonathan Elfstrum and Joshua Elfstrum. In addition, he is survived by cousins, Lynn Chumbley and Layne Harris; special friends, Mike Peters, Carroll Ivy, Willie M. Smith, Scotty Skinner, Ken Mayhall, Bob Green, Bud Pardue, and Billy Roy Harris.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
