Travis Albert Turberville of Sheffield died Tuesday, December 7, 2017. His family will receive friends today, Saturday, December 9, 2017, from 12:30-2:00 at First United Methodist Church Sheffield. The funeral service will follow in the sanctuary. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Travis was born December 19, 1925, in Corinth, Ms to Joseph and Verdie Lee Turberville. The family moved to Sheffield in 1932. Travis graduated from Sheffield High School in 1943. Through the Naval ROTC program, he attended Mercer University and then Georgia Tech. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1948 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. After serving in the Korean Conflict, he began work at Reynolds Metal Reduction plant in 1952. Travis held numerous positions at Reynolds including Plant Superintendent, Plant Engineer, and Environment, Energy and Land Manager. He worked for Reynolds for 37 years. He worked to start up the reduction facility and was sadly given the keys to close it many years later. He continued to lobby in Montgomery and Washington, DC for Reynolds and was on the Business Council of Alabama.
Travis had a passionate commitment to his family, community, and faith. He served as Sheffield Kiwanis Club member and president, treasurer of Colbert County United Way, president of Muscle Shoals Chamber of Commerce, and member and president of Sheffield Board of Education.
He was an active member of Sheffield First United Methodist Church and The Howard Jaggers’ Sunday School Class.
Travis married Dot Alexander on June 9, 1957. They were married almost 58 years and raised 3 daughters. They were wonderful parents and grandparents.
Travis had a larger than life personality and loved to share his memories of life growing up in Sheffield. He told everyone he encountered stories of hunting, fishing, his years in the Navy, his dogs, and his family. He was much loved and will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and one brother.
Survivors include daughters Sharon Romine (Richard), Lisa Lindsey and Tracy Minis (Dennis); grandchildren Travis and Thomas Lindsey (Megaan), Lexi and Jeffrey Romine, and Sam and Dorothy Kate Minis; great-grandchild Harper Tate Lindsey and very special nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Travis Lindsey, Thomas Lindsey, Jeffrey Romine, Sam Mims, Dennis Minis, Richard Romine, and Brian Lindsey.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Howard Jaggers’ Sunday school class.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the USO or First United Methodist Church would be appreciated.
