ATHENS-Tragic tales of ghostly lore were told Tuesday night during the weekly Haunts Walk. Walking groups looked for spirits and specters as storytellers regaled them with spooky speculations about odd occurrences in historic downtown Athens at the Lovvorn home, City Cemetery, Gov. Houston’s home, The Square and Founders Hall. At Gov. Houston’s home, for example, visitors and workers report hearing the governor’s favorite grandfather clock chiming, even though the clock cannot be found. At Founders Hall, it is told the third floor is haunted by a young woman named Mary who fell to her death when trying to sneak out at midnight to meet her true love, a Confederate soldier
about to depart for battle.
Tickets are available for purchase at the Athens Visitors Center, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM – noon) for the upcoming walks on Oct. 20 and 27 with each walk lasting about 2 hours.
