TUPELO, MS – This Labor Day weekend, follow these five tips while traveling Natchez Trace Parkway. Visitors should be aware of the following.
-
Fire danger is high, especially in Mississippi. Several counties have issued burn bans and visitors should be vigilant about fire safety when cooking out or camping.
-
Don’t drive or park on dry grass or brush. Hot exhaust pipes and mufflers can cause fires.
-
When towing a trailer be sure to secure chains and make sure nothing is dragging the ground.
-
Be on the lookout for bicyclists! With a lane width of 11 feet and little to no shoulder, remember to slow down, pass with care, and avoid distracted driving.
-
While the Parkway is scenic and peaceful, the unique design of the Natchez Trace required visitors to take extra care. No matter the activity or your itinerary, be sure to be aware of your surroundings and follow the speed limit.
To report a wildfire or emergency along the parkway, dial 911 or call 1-800-300-Park (7275). For trip planning information, local weather forecasts, and current conditions visit www.nps.gov/natr.
