Tony W. Martin passed away in Athens hospital on April 14, 2022. He was born February 27, 1948 in Guntersville to the late William E. “Doc” and Dora Jane Thrower Martin. Tony was a 1966 graduate of Arab High School. For many years Tony worked at the family business Ray’s Café in Guntersville. The last 30 years he owned and operated TM Trucking and retired in 2019. Tony enjoyed every aspect of the dump-truck world and was a lease truck for Reed Contracting. He also helped his son Will start his own Martin’s Excavating business and kept hauling materials until his retirement. Tony was always known as “Big T.”
Tony enjoyed Alabama football, NHRA, cooking BBQ and onion rings for friends, and people stopping by the shop to see who could come up with the most exaggerated story. Tony loved his constant companion, our baby Sofie. In younger years Tony and Betty were avid scuba divers. He enjoyed helping people in the Sweet Home Community and was always a friend to those in need. Tony was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church and served on the cemetery committee.
Tony is survived by his wife, Betty Martin, son Will (Jessica) Martin and his adored granddaughters Lexi, Mila, and Bella Martin all of Guntersville. He is also survived by brother, Lynn Martin, sister, Susan Benefield, and many extended family members. In addition to his parents, he is now reunited with his brother Travis Martin.
A visitation will be held at the Sweet Home Baptist Church Monday April 18 from 2:00 pm until service begins at 3:00. Pastor Tim Lynch is officiating. Interment is in Sweet Home Cemetery.
Pall bearers include Mark Brock, Tony Cooley, Al Cloud, Colby Martin, Mike Reed, Ted Reed, Jeremy Stewart, and Dustin Wilks.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr John Boggess, the late Charley Kelley, and the Senior Adult men at Sweet Home Baptist Church.
The family requests donations be made to the Sweet Home Baptist Church cemetery fund in lieu of flowers.
