Tom Atchley Darnell also known as “Big Daddy”, 86, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on November 19, 2019.
Tom was born in Huntsville, Alabama on October 11, 1933 to L.W. “Jack” and Lila Atchley Darnell. He grew up on McCullough Avenue in Five Points and had one brother, Gorden who preceded him in death. He graduated from Huntsville High School and attended Auburn University where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in France and Germany during the Korean War Conflict. He was a life-long member of Holmes Street Methodist Church.
He married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Logel, in 1956. They were married for 52 years before she passed away in 2008.
Tom was an entrepreneur and owned several businesses over the course of his life. One of his jobs included performing as an Elvis impersonator complete with a professionally made costume. He loved Auburn and Tennessee Titans football along with trips to Destin with his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made everyone around him laugh until they cried.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Angela Holland and son-in-law, Fred; his son, Tommy and daughter-in-law, Anne; grand-daughters, Anna Key (Kyle), Alexandria Darnell and Hannah Darnell; and great grand-daughter, Evie Key.
Tom never liked being the center of attention and per his wishes, there will be no services. The family would like to thank Crestwood Medical Center and Diversicare Rehabilitation Facility for their loving care of Tom.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville/Madison County Public Library or Hospice Family Care.
