20131012_1793 copySHEFFIELD – The setting was Riverfront Park. Anglers started showing up early Saturday morning to get their boats in the water for the 15th Annual “Fishing For Kids” event. It is always a special day. Tim Horton, Bassmaster Elite Series Pro, and his friends set out to make this a very special day for Arc of the Shoals folks.

Pretty much, everybody caught fish. And that was the point of the exercise.

There was also an unexpected surprise for Tim. He was awarded a commendation for his work in supporting Veterans. It came as a complete surprise. Ronald DeFreitas, founder and executive director of Reel American Heroes Foundation was there to present Horton with a plaque and and American flag in thanks for his dedication to Veterans. The flag he received had been carried aboard a medevac chopper in Afghanistan. DeFrieitas said Tim Horton has gone above an beyond to help the organization, including providing fishing equipment for the soldiers and taking them fishing, “He’s truly and amazing individual” Reel American Heroes Foundation, is a Virginia-based organization that provides recreational therapy (fishing opportunities) for wounded soldiers. Richard Mashburn of Spruce Pine, a veteran of the War in Afghanistan was there for the award presentation.
