Mr. Thomas “Tom” Fagan McFarland, age 91, a resident of Columbia, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Maury Regional Medical Center.

 

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Cynthia McGowen officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Air Force. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

Born on October 7, 1930, in Giles County, Tom was the son of the late Jack McFarland and the late Nola Marie McFarland. He served in United Air Force during the Korean War and worked at Monsanto Chemical Company until he retired in 1986. He later owned his own paint service company.

 

Tom was a dedicated youth coach. He coached American Little League Baseball for thirty-seven years; the field was eventually named after him. He also coached Pop Warner Football and recreational basketball. He was a devoted season ticket holder of the Columbia Central Lions football team for many years.

 

In his more recent years, he enjoyed his daily breakfast at Bucky’s Family Restaurant and dinner at Life Care Center where he loved visiting with the residents. He was a long-time member of Craft Memorial United Methodist Church.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Walter) Farmer of Madison, TN, grandchildren, Shayne (Delania) McFarland of Columbia, TN, Jody (Brandi) McFarland of White House, TN, Samantha Farmer of Madison, TN, Bo Farmer of Cleveland, TN, Tommy Farmer of Madison, TN, granddaughter in law, Lori McFarland, step daughter in law, Barbara Stewart, step granddaughter, Jane Childress, and great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Jenna, Klarissa, Rylan, and Rowan.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Stewart McFarland, daughter, Sheila McFarland, step son, Claudie Stewart, and siblings, Odell, Wendell, Paul, Pauline, and Mary Sue McFarland.

 

Pallbearers will be Matt Harness, Cheyenne Pipkin, Steadman Marlin, Kenny Manier, Jeff Howard, and Todd Bolton. Honorary pallbearers will include his friends at Bucky’s Family Restaurant.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Miracle League of Columbia, P.O. Box 654, Spring Hill, TN 37174.

 

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the 3rd floor doctors, nurses, and techs at Maury Regional Medical Center, Hospice Compassus, Cheyenne Pipkin, Matt Harness, Mike Bolton, and Bucky’s Family Restaurant for their care for Tom over the years.
