Thomas Lester Hearn – Obituary

Thomas Lester Hearn, age 90, of Sheffield Alabama died on May 16, 2017. Visitation will be Friday, May 19, from 9:30 – 11 am at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow the visitation in the chapel. Bill Bedsole will be officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.

He was born on September 14,1926 in Sheffield, Alabama to William Mack and Vergie Blackburn Hearn.

After his mother’s death when he was 7 he lived with his Aunt Zula and Uncle Riley Malone in Allsboro, Alabama for 11 years, attended school at Allsboro near Cherokee. He graduated from Sheffield High School and attended Florence State Teachers College.

Mr. Hearn served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a member of Sheffield First United Methodist Church. He retired from Bell South after 40 years of service He was President of Communication Workers of America Local Union #9111 for 17 years. He served 17 years on the Colbert County Hospital Board from 1963 to 1983. Tommy served as a Mason at Sheffield Lodge #503 for over 50 years. He was a member of Vertagreen Lodge and Lodge #919 in Cherokee, Alabama. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Will and Vergie Hearn, sisters: Cora Virginia Davis, Zula Marie Giles, and Martha Jane Williams, brothers: William Leroy Hearn, and Thompson McCoy Hearn.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Rebecca Mae Wright Hearn, sons: Jeffty Hearn and wife Nancy of Muscle Shoals, Randy Hearn and wife Andrea of Clover, South Carolina, Mark Hearn and wife Linda of Anniston, Alabama, daughter: Susan Abrams and husband Tommy of Rockford, Alabama, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Sid Hearn, Paul Hearn, Patrick Hearn, Michael Hearn, Stephan Hearn, Braden Hearn, Josh Abrams, Chase Abrams and Thomas King.

The Hearn Family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Keller ER, Dr. Loren McCoy, the doctors and nurses of ECM Hospital ER and Intensive Care Unit, staff at Cottage of the Shoals Rehabilitation Center and all of the other wonderful doctors and nurses for providing such wonderful care of our dear father, grandfather and great grandfather during the past few weeks.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Sheffield.
