Thomas Eugene Hendrix, known to many as the Stonetalker, died Feb. 24, 2017.
Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama on Feb. 14, 1934, to Thomas Everett Hendrix and Clara Styles Hendrix, Tom graduated from Deshler High School and attended Florence State Teachers College. He served in the Army Reserve where he distinguished himself in marksmanship. He later worked at Robbins Tire and Rubber Company and Ford Motor Company taking early retirement when the Muscle Shoals Ford plant was closed.
The work Tom was most proud of was the massive stone memorial wall he built over 25 years time on his property at Threets Crossroads. Honoring his Yuchi great-great-grandmother, Te-lah-nay’s Wall has drawn a multitude of visitors from every state in the Union and from many foreign countries. The book he wrote about Te-lah-nay’s journey, If the Legends Fade, has sold more than 17,000 copies. He loved nothing better than greeting visitors at the Wall, telling his great-great-grandmother’s story, and answering questions. He was a gifted storyteller, and he loved people.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Clara Hendrix.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen Owens Hendrix; his sister, Shirley Hendrix Liles; sons, Danny (Deborah), Trace (Tammy), and Tom (Donna); daughters, Laura Thrasher and Kelly Thrasher; grandchildren, Jay Mark Hendrix, Taylor Hendrix, Beau Hendrix, and Caree Hendrix; and great-granddaughter, Malee Hendrix.
The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 2, 2017, at Morrison Funeral Home, 12081 Savannah Hwy, Florence. There will be a private family burial.
