Thomas Andrew Young – Obituary

Young250Thomas Andrew Young, Ed.D., of Fayetteville, passed away, June 8, at 75-years-old. Mr. Young was born in Murfreesboro, and was the son of the late Thomas Esten and Christine Harrell Young. He served in the United States Army, and was an educator and coach in numerous communities. His most notably long service was with the Fayetteville and Lincoln County School Systems, where he taught and supervised for 35 years. Mr. Young holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of North Alabama (formerly Florence State); a Masters degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville; and a Doctorate in education from the University of Alabama. A loving husband and member of the Washington Street Church of Christ, Mr. Young was a TSSAA official, Boy Scouts of America Trooper Leader, and a volunteer for the Lincoln County Archives. He also served as City Alderman for the Fayetteville Board of Mayor and Alderman. Mr. Young had the distinct privilege of serving as the final manager of the Lee Dell pool, the last principal of Robert E. Lee School, and the first principal of Ralph Askins Elementary School. He was also a Tennessee state evaluator. He was an avid golfer, winning the former Fayetteville Golf and Country Club’s annual calcutta on two occasions. Mr. Young’s interests included brick masonry, carpentry, and Civil War history. He was passionate about genealogy and his grandchildren, and enjoyed some international travels to Japan and Great Britain. Mr. Thomas Young is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy “Dot” Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Smith Young, and his two children who are, son, Thomas Andrew “Drew” Young (Tori), of Fayetteville, and daughter, Christan Young Jones (James), of Arrington. He is survived by his grandchildren, Andy, Emma and Aidan Young, along with Miles and Henry Jones. His brothers, Joseph (Wanda) and Jim Young survive him as well. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, June 10, from 5-8 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home and funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 11, at 10 a.m. at Higgins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers, to the Tom Young Education Memorial Scholarship Fund at First National Bank, or directly to the Fayetteville Lincoln County Public Library. Higgins Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
