ATHENS-Quietly at rest, a top the hill of Athens City Cemetery lays the grit and fortitude of the forefathers which built Athens-Limestone County. On November 4th you will step into the former world of those who shaped our towns and county. These spirits will come alive with tales of history, heritage, family and community. Local residents become actors in period dress, many of them descendants of the very people they are portraying.
The day of storytelling from yesteryear begins at 2:00 p.m. with tales woven from passed-down family history and speckled with tales of a burgeoning community; their successes, their struggles and even the war. Each actor has diligently researched their “spirit” and their life in the days of old. This free public event will run until 5:00 p.m on Sunday, November 4th.
The Athens Bicentennial Cemetery Stroll has been endorsed by the AL200.org committee. Limestone County celebrated their 200th Anniversary with an event celebrating 200 years of growth, education, agriculture and families on February 6th 2018. The City of Athens and town of Mooresville will be celebrating their 200th birthday on November 16th and 17th 2018. In December of 2019 we will celebrate our State’s 200th Birthday.
We are ‘Honoring our People’ in 2018, and we will ‘Share our Stories’ in 2019. There is no better way to do both of these tasks than in our Athens Cemetery Stroll as part of the bicentennial activities.
The event is presented by the Athens-Limestone County Tourism and Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
We are currently accepting actors for this year’s stroll. If interested, contact the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Office 256-232-5411 or Buzz Estes 256-434-0441 for additional information.
