That time of the year again out with the old and in with the new.  But the biting question is….When did and where did New Year’s Eve originate?

The earliest known record of a New Year festival dates from about 2000 bce in Mesopotamia, where in Babylonia the new year (Akitu) began with the new moon after the spring equinox (mid-March) and in Assyria with the new moon nearest the autumn equinox (mid-September).

New Year 2023: Why is January 1 celebrated as New Year …
It was Roman dictator Julius Caesar who reformed the Calendar after coming to power. He instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

So get out there raise a toast…kiss your partner….make that resolution and celebrate a new beginning.
