Collaboratory Schedule Summer 2017

All sessions are free. Seating is limited and is filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

3D Printing Series
In this four-part series, we’ll introduce you to what desktop 3D printing is, get started creating basic 3D designs with TinkerCAD, prepare our 3D models for printing, and discuss techniques for improving the quality of finished 3D prints.

Introduction to 3D Printing
Thursday, June 8, 3:30-5:00pm
In this session, we will discuss the basics of desktop 3D printing. We will address the benefits of 3D printing, the differences between 3D printing and other types of manufacturing, the varieties of 3D printing, and the 3D printing process.
3D Modeling Basics
Thursday, June 15, 3:30-5:00pm
If you want to do more than print other people’s 3D designs, this is the perfect session for you. Using TinkerCAD, you can create basic 3D models in a user-friendly environment for those who know absolutely nothing about 3D modeling software. This session will introduce you to some of the basic functions used to create 3D designs with 3D modeling software.
Preparing 3D Prints
Thursday, June 22, 3:30-5:00pm
In this session, we will discuss various software used to slice 3D models and we will show you how to use slicing software to prepare your 3D models for printing.
Troubleshooting and Finishing 3D Prints
Thursday, June 29, 3:30-5:00pm
In this final session, we will explore various difficulties that can arise from getting your 3D prints to come out just right. Additionally, we’ll talk about techniques that can be used to improve the final result of your models after they have been printed.
Getting Started Series
The Getting Started Series consists of individual sessions intended to acquaint the library community with the different services and equipment available for use in the Collaboratory. Each session addresses a single topic.

Getting Started with Raspberry Pi
Monday, June 5, 4:00-5:00pm
Raspberry Pi is an affordable ($20-35) minicomputer the size of a credit card! In this session, we will explore the basics of computing with Raspberry Pi. We’ll look at hardware, software, and potential DIY projects made cost-effective with Raspberry Pi.
Getting Started with Arduino
Monday, June 12, 4:00-5:00pm
Arduino microcontrollers are small, affordable circuit boards that are great at doing routine tasks. Arduino microcontrollers can do just about anything. Whether you want to automate watering your plants or get started with robotics projects, you’ll want to see what Arduino has to offer.
Getting Started with Soldering
Monday, June 19, 4:00-5:00pm
One of the fundamental tasks of any electronics project is the requirement to soldering electronics components and wires in place on a circuit board. This session will demonstrate the basic tools used for soldering and basic soldering techniques. All supplies and equipment will be provided for this session.
Getting Started with Vinyl Cutting
Monday, June 26, 4:00-5:00pm
Using the Silhouette Cameo, we will explore various applications for vinyl cutting. Whether you want to get started creating your own signs, designing your own custom-made stickers, or personalizing your possession, you’ll want to check this session out.
Getting Started with Sonic Pi
Monday, July 3, 4:00-5:00pm
Sonic Pi is an open source programming environment that allows people to learn basic programming concepts and make music at the same time. In this session, we will talk more about what Sonic Pi is, how it works, and explore making our own music.
Getting Started with Green Screen
Thursday, July 6, 4:00-5:00pm
Used for everything from TV weather forecasts to special movie effects, using a green screen is great for fun or serious video projects. We’ll talk about how green screening works, what its capable of, and how you can use the green screen in the Collaboratory for your future video projects.
Getting Started with Open Source
Monday, July 10, 4:00-5:00pm
In this whirlwind tour, we’ll discuss what “open source” means and provide several examples (with hands-on experience) of open source tools to complete projects and pursue hobbies when you have limited resources at your disposal.
