THE SHOALS-In an effort to increase the amount of scholarships awarded to local high school students interested in studying history at the University of North Alabama, the Tennessee Valley Historical Society (TVHS) is initiating a series of historic trolley tours as a fundraiser.
The first two tours will be conducted by local historian and TVHS board member Lee Freeman. The Blue & Gray tours will travel to sites associated with the Civil War in the Florence area, visiting 12 downtown sites that existed during the Civil War and discussing what role they played in housing troops, horses and those who were wounded or had fallen ill.
The first tour will depart from the Florence-Lauderdale Tourism & Visitor Center in
McFarland Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. The second tour will depart on Saturday, May 16, at 10:00 a.m.
Participants are requested to call the Florence-Lauderdale Tourism Office at 256-740-4141 to reserve a seat. Cost of the tour will be $15. Children who are able to sit in their parent’s laps for the duration of the tour may ride free; all children who must sit in a seat will be charged full fare.
Participants are also requested to arrive at the Visitor Center 30 minutes prior to departure for registration and refreshments. Tours will depart promptly at the stated times.
All proceeds of the tours will be used for scholarships.
About the Tennessee Valley Historical Society:
One of the goals of the Tennessee Valley Historical Society (TVHS) is to encourage students to develop an interest in history and to help bridge the gap between generations. For several years the TVHS has provided scholarships to local high school students interested in studying history at the University of North Alabama. Winners are chosen at a competition held annually at UNA in March.
