Firefighters talked to the teens about the dangers of texting and driving and other forms of distracted driving. 72 Automotive in Athens donated vehicles so the firefighters could learn about extrication procedures. The students watched firefighters and learned what it can be like to be trapped in a car while first responders try to cut you out. Youth Commissioner Tori Jean agreed to attempt to put on turnout gear in 1 minute (it took her over 2 minutes) and got to heft a 50-pound piece of extrication equipment and learn how to cut the top off a car to rescue a victim.
“I want to be a dentist,” she said during the experience.
Youth Commissioner Ben Clark approached Athens Fire and Rescue about conducting a demo for Athens High School to help convey to students the importance of not driving distracted.
