Sylvia Patricia Briggs, age 83, passed away on September 23, 2024. Pat was a beacon of love and kindness, embodying a spirit of service and compassion that touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She was born on July 31, 1941, in Decherd, Tennessee to the late Webb Tate and Mary Lou Starnes Swann. She is proceeded in death by her parents Webb Tate and Mary Lou Starnes Swann; sisters Emma Jean Stewart and Bonnie Sue Hughes; brother, Frank Tate Swann. Pat is survived by her son, Aaron (Sandra) Briggs of Nashville; daughter, Sheralee (Andy) Riddle of Murfreesboro; grandchildren Jesse Briggs, Alison Briggs, KelliAnn Riddle, Peyton Riddle.

Pat followed in the footsteps of her two older sisters teaching elementary school for nearly forty years. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her dedication, patience, and love for her students. She was often known for walking the playground during recess. This love of walking continued into her final days.

A devoted member of Murfreesboro First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Pat served as an elder, sang in the choir, and would often help teach the children’s sermon on Sunday mornings. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her in her service to others and creating a network of love and support within her church and community.

In her downtime, Pat cherished the company of her friends, visiting nursing homes and bringing joy and comfort to those in need. Her friends knew her as a loyal companion, with an encouraging word that could brighten the darkest of days. She often volunteered serving meals to Murfreesboro homeless women and to college students at Middle Tennessee State University.

Sylvia Patricia Briggs leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering service. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, including her children and grandchildren, her extended family, her church community, and the many lives she touched through her teaching and compassionate acts.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, from 1pm-2pm at the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home Chapel in Winchester, TN. Funeral Service will follow on September 28, 2024, at 2pm in the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at the Mount Garner Cemetery in Decherd, TN.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making a donation to the Murfreesboro First Cumberland Presbyterian building fund. This initiative was close to Pat’s heart, and contributions will help ensure that the church continues to be a place of hope and community for many.
