Sylvester "Slivers" Merkle Profile Photo Sylvester “Slivers” Merkle was a man of many talents. Born in Chicago, IL in 1930, he grew up as one of ten children and learned to be resourceful from an early age. Known for his signature cap that he always wore, Slivers was hardworking and never shied away from getting his hands dirty.

Throughout his life, he pursued various careers and was a true jack-of-all-trades. He excelled at carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical work – there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix. Perhaps it was his stubborn nature that drove him to master so many skills, but it was undoubtedly his loving personality that endeared him to all those who met him.

On June 10th, 2023 Sylvester “Slivers” Merkle passed away peacefully at Diversicare of Ripley. He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Aldridge; granddaughter, Natalie Snow; grandsons, Gary Snow and Jeff Aldridge; 4 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sisters, JoAnn Hake and Margie Nelson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Merkle; sons, Jimmy Merkle and Gary Snow. Although he may no longer be with us physically, the memories he left behind will live on forever.

A memorial gathering will be held from 1-2 pm on Wednesday, June 14th at Magnolia Funeral Home – East followed by a memorial service at 2 pm where friends and family can come together to honor Slivers’ life. Bro. Charles Stephenson will officiate the service.

For everything that Sylvester “Slivers” Merkle has done during the course of his long life, his impact will never be forgotten; he approached every challenge with grace and determination that inspired loyalty in the hearts of all who knew him. He always lived life to the fullest and his love for his family and friends was felt by all. May he rest in peace, knowing that he will always be remembered with love.
