Suspect Shot During Welfare Check In Cherokee Dies From Injuries

CHEROKEE-The Cherokee Police Department released a statement concerning an Officer Involved Shooting on Saturday February 4. According to authorities with the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office the suspect who had been shot died from his injuries and no police officers were injured in the altercation.

Authorities had released the name of the suspect who died from his injuries as Jason Harbin, 40.  Colbert County Coroner Justin Gasque confirmed that Harbin’s body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy.

Officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave which is common practice with an officer involved shooting per investigation by the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.

Statement from the Cherokee Police:

“On the morning of February 04, 2023 at approximately 1:55 am Cherokee Police Department along with the assistance of Colbert County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of HWY 72 & COVE RD in the city limits of Cherokee for a Welfare Check involving, “A Person Being Held Against Their Will”!

Upon arrival, officers got into a physical altercation and one of the suspects pointed what was believed to be a handgun. There were no officers injured. The case has been turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.”
