Susan Akin Ogilvie Thomason Susan Akin Ogilvie Thomason was born April 14, 1926, to Janie Pearl and James Robert Ogilvie in Columbia, Tennessee. She died July 29, 2021, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital where she worked as a Registered Nurse for 36 years and was a volunteer in critical care waiting until she was 92 years old.

She is survived by five children, Dale Thomason Merwin and husband Tim Merwin, Mike Thomason, Janice Thomason, Jim Thomason and Leeta Thomason Stevens and seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Merwin, Jennifer Merwin Shackelford, Ben Stevens, Laura Stevens Pointer, Amy Thomason, Michael Thomason and Richard Thomason, and thirteen great grandchildren, Blake and Adam Merwin, Clayton, Jack and Andrew Shackelford, Elijah and Caroline Blair Stevens, Larissa, Tabatha, Olivia, Seth and Lucy Susan Pointer and Zander Akin Thomason.

Her two brothers, Richard and Harry Ogilivie, and one son in law, Gene Stevens, preceded her in death.

Susan was 1944 Salutatorian of Central High School in Columbia, Tennessee and a charter member of the marching band playing the clarinet. After high school she graduated from Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, Tennessee as a member of the US Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II.

Susan was an active member of West Jackson Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, ringing handbells, teaching in the exceptional Sunday School class, tutoring at Hartland Apartment ministries, the GROW program and prayer ministry.

She was also an avid supporter of Union University. She loved supporting the basketball teams and the EDGE program.

Pallbearers will be Tim Merwin, Jeffrey Merwin, Ben Stevens, Michael Thomason, Richard Thomason, Fred Shackelford and Stephen Pointer. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Hyram Barefoot and Lawrence Taylor.

Memorials can be given to the Susan O. Thomason Nursing Scholarship at Union University, the Union University EDGE program, 1050 Union University Dr. Jackson, TN 38305 or the Hartland camp ministry of West Jackson Baptist Church, 580 Oil Well Road, Jackson, TN 38305.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 3:00 PM at West Jackson Baptist Church with Rev. Lonnie Sanders and Fred Shackelford officiating. For those unable to attend the service it will be livestreamed at wjbc.org. The visitation with family will be at 2:00 PM at West Jackson Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Ridgecrest Cemetery.
