Sue Jackson Sorter, daughter of Cloudis Odell Jackson and Mary Bell Starkey, passed away on August 3, 2024; exactly one-month shy of her 95th birthday. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, niece, and nephew when she took her final breath. She was a pillar of the community, who shattered glass ceilings, and will be missed by her many friends and family members. She was the first woman ever elected to the City Council of Guntersville (serving 4 terms), the first female fire commissioner in the state of Alabama, and the president of Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG). She and her husband Clyde also owned Sorter Grocery – the last credit grocery store in the state of Alabama, which closed its doors in 1985 after serving the community for 24 years. She finished her 75 year-long career in 2016 when she retired from Lake Guntersville Real-estate, where she served as office manager for 31 years. She was a passionate woman, who advocated for others, and was always ready to help. She enjoyed cooking, reading, dancing, and catching up with the gossip on Facebook. Her greatest love, however, was her family. She is survived by her daughter Jane Slaten (Winford); son Clyde “Scooter” Sorter, Jr. (Tammy); grandchildren Christy Pepper (William Sr.), Shane Slaten (Melissa), Danielle Sorter Woodham (Matthew), and Dylan Sorter (Kenyonika); great-grandchildren Ashley Moorer (Leslie), Christopher Moorer (Reba), Molly Moorer, Jackson Sorter, Austin Slaten, Bella Brothers, Brielle Hall, Kenzie Hall, Megan Pepper, Claire Pepper Comparetto and William W. Pepper, Jr.; great-great grandchildren Payton Moorer, Abby Moorer, Max Moorer, and Ben Moorer; brother-in-law Billy Ray Sorter (Dianne); and numerous nieces and nephews, notably Iris Decker. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clyde Sorter Sr., her sister Lou Kelly (Jake), and great-granddaughter Esmae Woodham.
