Sue Houser, born Sue Ann Slauson July 8, 1936, passed away December 4, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Houser, her brother Peter Slauson and parents Lawrence and Alberta Slauson. Sue was born and raised in San Francisco, California where she loved the temperate weather, ocean views and rolling fog. She was thrilled to have attended Washington High School with Jonny Mathis, who was one year ahead of her. Sue was a talented artist and teacher. She graduated from University of Oregon with a Masters in Art Education. It was there that she met James Houser. They married in 1958 and lived in Eugene, Oregon before moving in 1961 to Jim’s hometown, St. Louis, Missouri. There they began a family and Sue began working as a high school art teacher. Sue also had a small business: SASH inc., producing batik, sculpture and silk-screened art. Her children have wonderful memories of trips to various parks to share Sue’s love of nature and feed many flocks of ducks and geese. She was a devoted member of Parkway United Church of Christ, remaining in contact with members even after her move to Nashville, TN in 2018 to be closer to her children, Eric and Carole (Bartoo). Sue’s family is grateful for loving care she received from the staff at Bethany Center for many years, and then for a brief time at NHC Cool Springs where she won the hearts of many excellent care partners, Nurses and other staff. She is survived by her son Eric Houser, her daughter Carole and son-in-law Jim Bartoo and granddaughters Emma and Grace. A visitation will be held from 4:00PM-6:00PM Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund.
