Sue Haste Malone, 83, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Born on June 21, 1938 in Memphis, TN to Frances and Maurice Haste, she grew up in Cookeville, TN, graduating from Cookeville Central High School in 1956 as valedictorian and from Tennessee Tech in 1960, also as valedictorian. She married William T. Malone in 1961 and they moved to Columbia in 1964 to open his dental practice. She joined St. Peter’s Episcopal Church that year and served the church in many capacities, including junior warden of the vestry. Sue worked for the Maury County school system for almost 30 years, first as a homebound teacher, then at Columbia Central High School, then again with homebound students. She was an active member of the King’s Daughters and Sons for over 50 years, serving as an officer on the local (Annie White circle), state, and international levels. She volunteered and held board positions with many organizations in Maury County over the years, including the Christmas Seals Board, the Library Board, the King’s Daughters’ School Board, the People’s Table and Columbia Counseling Ministries, and served one term as an elected Maury County Commissioner. She also gave her time to Meals on Wheels, the Book Mart at the library, and faithfully washed dishes for the People’s Table for as long as she was able.
In addition to her extensive volunteer work Sue enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. “Grannie Sue” was a fixture in all of their lives and will be missed immeasurably. Her collections of iris, whale, and Twelve Days of Christmas themed items were legendary.
She is survived by her three children Mollie (Rich) Sund of Palatine, IL, William (Rebecca) Malone Jr of St. Augustine, FL; and Michael (Julie) Malone of Columbia; grandchildren Brian Sund, Rebecca (Tom) Harris, Emily Sund, Sarah Hartshorn, Sam Malone, Mary Claire Malone, Liam Malone, MacKenzie (Jeff) Bieber, Dawson Snow, and Darby Snow, sister Pat Moore, nephew Richard Moore, and several cousins.
