Our beloved mother and grandmother, Sue Chaffin Brown, died on October 28, 2024, after a long battle with dementia. She was 77.
Sue was born in Albertville, Alabama, on December 15, 1946, to W.L. and Geraldine Chaffin, the third of their four children. As an Air Force brat, she grew up all around the world and loved telling stories of her childhood in Newfoundland and Germany. She eventually made her way back to Alabama and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Jacksonville State University. She then became an elementary school teacher and taught in many school districts throughout the United States.
Sue was the heart and light of the family. She was married for 54 years to Bill, who preceded her in death by only a few short months. She dedicated much of her life to being a supportive Army wife. She was a wonderful mother to Will (Leila) and Jo Anne (Michael), making every one of the 15 houses they lived in feel like home. As “Gran” to Katherine and Will, she was known as the fun, energetic grandmother, always ready to play. As “Ma” to Ella Grace, Mitchell, Charlie, Griffin, and Libby Sue, she was a teacher again – this time teaching lessons in empathy and compassion.
At Sue’s request from long ago, there will be no services, but we will instead share a laugh and raise a glass to a life well-lived.
