Student anglers will pack downtown Sheffield Saturday

SHEFFIELD-A flotilla of bass boats is headed for downtown Sheffield.

More than 500 anglers from 50 schools throughout the state are expected  in the Shoals Saturday for an Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association fishing tournament on Pickwick Lake. The tournament will launch from Riverfront Park. The weigh-in, which begins at 2 p.m., will be at the Singing River statue on North Montgomery Avenue.

Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau is hosting the tournament. In addition to the anglers, more than 500 boat captains, who pilot the boats for the student anglers, will attend. Family members and friends on the anglers will also attend.  Susann Hamlin, president and CEO of Colbert Tourism expects around 1,000 people will pack into downtown Sheffield for the weigh-in. She said it will have a major impact on the local economy.
