Lt. Col. Steven McFeeters, U. S. Army, Retired, 61, departed this life on Thursday, September 13, 2018 while a patient in the ICU unit of the North Miss. Medical Center in Tupelo. A native of Atchison, Kansas, Steven was born on July 21, 1957, to the late Louis McFeeter and Marion Reynolds McFeeter. He grew up in Atchison and attended Tulane University in New Orleans, where he received his bachelors degree in Paleontology with a minor in political science. He loved his time in New Orleans and became a fan of the city. Lt. Col McFeeters, being a patriotic American, was a career military man serving 22 years in the U. S. Army. He saw action in Bosnia and Germany and Saudi Arabia. He was honorably discharged with several medallions and citations for his courage, bravery and astute military leadership. After world travels to over 20 countries and 8 moves in 20 years, he and his family settled as permanent residents in the Tupelo area in l998. Steven was a highly intelligent, well-read man who was a thinker, a philosopher and very knowledgeable about world cultures and mores. An exaggerated Irish storyteller, Steven enjoyed large gatherings of family and friends at his home where he would use his master cooking skills to feed and accompany with ribald stories often embellished. He loved art, music of all genres and playing the dulcimer and viola. A renaissance man, his life was filled with laughter, fellowship and comraderie of family and friends. A Methodist, he once coined the phrase, “Religion is for those who are scared of hell!! Spirituality is for those who have been there!!” He was an active member of the American Legion.
A celebration of his life, with full military honors, will be held at 1 PM Sunday, September 16, 2018 in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with his daughter, Krista Marie Davis delivering greetings and family reflections and Mr. Brent Kelly sharing spiritual reflections. A private burial will follow later in a National Military Cemetery. Visitation is from Noon-service time on Sunday at Holland-Tupelo Chapel, 5281 Cliff Gookin Blvd, Tupelo, MS. 38801. A reception will follow in the dining hall of the funeral home immediately after the service. Survivors include his wife, Monica Lynn Seymour McFeeters of Baldwyn; his son, Seth Ira McFeeters his daughter, Krista Marie Davis and her husband, Robert “Bob” Davis ; an adored granddaughter, “Ellie” Zoe Eloise Davis and a sister, Diana McFeeters. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Michael McFeeters.
