Mr. Steve Wood of New Market passed away on Sunday morning while surrounded by his loving family.   He was 79 and was a graduate of Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield, South Carolina where he was born and raised.

Mr. Wood loved his career as a truck driver from which he retired after 33 years.   He was a gifted diesel mechanic and enjoyed working on trucks, watching NASCAR races, mowing his grass, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tandy Everett Wood Jr. & Ruth Stephenson Wood Williams, and by his brother, Tommy Williams.

Surviving family members include his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Holder Wood;  His children:  Terry (Julie) Wood, Ronald (Carrie) Wood, and Holly (Jeff) Billions;  His grandchildren:  Lindsay (Seth) Mullins, Kelsey (Brian) Johnson, Katie Wood (Joshua Swinea), Madison Billions, Parker Billions, and Rowdy Wood;  His great-grandchildren: Briley Johnson and Waylon Johnson;  His sister: Kay Atkins.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12pm until 2pm at Hazel Green Funeral Home.  A graveside funeral service will follow at 2:30pm at Taylor Cemetery.   Pallbearers will be Seth Mullins, Joshua Swinea, Parker Billions, Brian Johnson, Jeff Billions, and Raymond Holder. 

Mr. Wood will be remembered for being a good man, for his kind heart, and for his love for his family.   Though he was a man of few words, when he spoke, his words meant something.
