Dr. Stanley Douglas Patterson, 83, beloved father, brother, and friend, left for his heavenly home on November 2, 2024 after a lengthy Alzheimer’s illness.
Doug, son of Jack and Mildred Patterson, was raised in Hazel Green, AL where he spent endless hours outdoors hiking, fishing, canoeing and spelunking. He thoroughly enjoyed exploring nature. Doug was an Eagle Scout, Future Farmer of America President, winner of numerous public speaking contests, and Valedictorian of Hazel Green High School. The day after graduation he married Barbara Gilbreath then went to begin college at Auburn University. There he earned a B.S. in Agriculture Education and Master of Education then Doctorate of Education from University of Illinois. He taught agriculture education in Illinois, Florida and Virginia universities before working in the State of Alabama Vocational Education Division where he was instrumental in bringing advance automotive manufacturing training programs to Community and Technical colleges. Doug also served as President of John M. Patterson State Technical College and President of Academic Affairs at Amridge University in Montgomery.
As a longtime member of the Hampton Cove Church of Christ, Doug actively taught Bible classes and periodically preached. He was a shining example of Christian love: caring for others, full of joy, singing and smiling, always wanting to talk and get to know people.
