8th Grader to attend renowned comedy training facility during summer
FLORENCE – John Methvin, graduating 8th grader in the Junior High program at St.
Joseph Catholic School, was awarded a merit scholarship to attend the world-famous
Second City Training Facility in Chicago, IL. The scholarship was awarded based on
Methvin’s combination of performance and writing for comedy.
Methvin, in his third year at Second City Chicago, will use the scholarship to return to
Chicago and continue his training in sketch comedy performance and writing, and stand
up performance. Methvin credited St. Joseph teachers Rita Magrini and Andrew Franck
for their work and encouragement in fostering his interest in comedy performance. The
student will attend Florence Freshman Center in the fall.
Founded in 1959, Second City Chicago is considered the nation’s premier training ground
for sketch and standup comedy. Alumni include Tina Fey, Amy Koehler, Steve Carell, Jim
Belushi, Chevy Chase, Chris Farley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bill Murray, among others.
The Junior High program at St. Joseph Catholic School is dedicated to offering 6th, 7th, and
8th grade students a challenging academic program within a nurturing Christian
environment.
