ATHENS – CASA of Athens has been doing this for a long time. Slinging mud, that is. In fact this year’s annual Mud Volleyball Tournament , scheduled for July 20, 2013 at 9:00am, will mark the 25th anniversary of the event.
We called Sandra Zirbel at CASA of Limestone County and asked her, “Why mud volleyball?”
“Well, its just a lot of fun. And we raise a lot of money for our projects,” she told us. CASA serves the elderly and homebound in Limestone County. Some of the things they do are, building wheelchair ramps; installing handrails; they weatherize homes to keep the people they serve warm in Winter; they provide fans and air conditioners to help keep houses comfortable in Summer.
“Every year, it just gets bigger and bigger,” Sandra told us. “We have people come in for the tournament for all over Alabama. In fact somebody last year came all the way from out West just to play mud volleyball and get muddy!”
CASA of Limestone County is a great organization. Their whole purpose is to enable the elderly and infirmed stay in their homes for as long as possible before going to a nursing home. It is a one-stop place for the elderly in need.
