Solon Phillips “Bud” Vaughn

Solon Phillips “Bud” Vaughn passed away at home on June 15 at the age of 89. He was born in Huntsville on April 6, 1931 to the late William Yancey Vaughn and Lena Mae Phillips Vaughn. Solon graduated from Huntsville High School in 1949, and then worked in the family-owned grocery store. He joined the Alabama National Guard upon return from his service in the Korean Conflict and married the late Jo Ann Ratliff in March 1955.

Solon was a Chief Warrant Officer Four when he retired from the 1169th Engineering Group in 1989 with 35 years of service. During his service he received the Meritorious Service, Commendation, Achievement, Good Conduct, National Defense, Korean Service, and United Nations Service medals from the Army, and Distinguished Service, Commendation, and Faithful Service Medals from the Alabama National Guard. In addition, Solon received The William E. Griffith Retiree of the Year Award from the Alabama National Guard in 1994, Sustained Service Award from United Cerebral Palsy of the Tennessee Valley in 1997, and the Distinguished Service Medal from the State of Alabama in 2020.

He enjoyed pitching darts, could fix anything, and was an avid NASCAR fan, attending numerous Daytona 500 races with his National Guard buddies. Solon was a member of the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Squire Association.

Solon is survived by his loving daughter, Sheree Vaughn Kelley; son-in-law, Walter Allen Kelley; sister, Mary Louise Manning; three nieces; three nephews; and many devoted friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18 at Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Valley United Methodist Church Building Fund.
