Sibyl McMahan Layton – Obituary

Sibyl McMahan Layton, 87, passed away November 22, 2015.
Sibyl was born in Collierville, Tennessee and grew up in Tuscumbia, where she graduated from Deshler High School. She attended Southwestern College, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. On April 15, 1950, she married Robert Lemuel Layton Jr. in Tuscumbia. The Laytons settled in Leighton, where they raised two children.
Sibyl was active in the community and graciously contributed her time to the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, the Ritz Theatre, the Colbert Caring Center, the Leighton Public Library, the Muscle Shoals District Service League, and the Salvation Army. Of particular joy to Sibyl was spending time with her friends in the Maud Lindsay Study Club, Bridge Club, Sewing Club, and Les Bonnes Vivantes.
Sibyl is survived by her son, Robert Lemuel Layton III; her daughter, Julie Layton Martin; Judy Meeks Keenum; and her grandchildren Laura Katherine Layton, James Swayze Layton, Samuel Robert Martin, and Layton Elizabeth Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be James Gilbert Berryman, John Gregory Bowling, David Clifton Corsbie, Gordon Preuit Fennel, Mark Lile Fennel, Fred Benjamin King, Edward Fennel Mauldin Jr., Leonard Preuit Mauldin, Macke Buchanan Mauldin, and Hilard Elbert Whitlock III.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. James Dale Ashmore, Ralph Berryman, John Brooks Bowling, Roger O’Neal Gargis, Howell Thomas Heflin Jr., Dr. Charles Cooper King, James Briscoe King, James Edward Jones, Paul Everett Jones III, Charles Marvin Morgan, William Earl Roper, Billy Scott Shoemaker, Peter Jerome Vials, Joseph Murray Ware, Thomas Jacob Watson, Frontis S. Winford, and Brian Frohman Young.
On Wednesday, November 25, 2015, her body will lie in repose beginning at noon, and the funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Leighton. The Reverend Sam Hardie III will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Tuscumbia. The family will receive friends at the Layton home after the burial. Morrison Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family wishes to thank her caregivers Laven Coffey, Lelia McDade, Natasha West, Tanika Sandridge and offers a special thanks to Jesena Sanders for her friendship, compassion, and dedication.
