Funeral Services for Shoney Rice, age 77 of Ashland, will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Pastor Phillip Holloway and Pastor Larry Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at New Harmony Christian Church Cemetery.
Mr. Rice passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at the UAB Hospital. A lifelong resident of Clay County, Mr. Rice worked as a truck driver for over 45 years, working for various companies. He could be found outside most of the time, either cutting grass at Faith Christian Fellowship, or walking down Highway 9 to the Mapco. Shoney and his son, Leroy loved to sit at the Mapco and meet new people. He never met a stranger, and always took care of his family. Shoney was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of Faith Christian Fellowship.
Mr. Rice is survived by his son, Leroy Rice (Sherry) of Ashland; his daughter, Linda Kennedy (James Burkhalter); three grandchildren: Derrick Kennedy, Thomas Burkhalter, and Jeremy Rice, all of Cragford; his fur baby, Coco and a large extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Newt and Eula Walker Rice, one sister and five brothers.
Active Pallbearers will be Doug Heath, Lee Heath, Tracey Pitts, Larry Archer, Paul Holloway, Matthew Wilson, Derrick Kennedy, and Joshua Holloway.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Luke Bishop and Tony Wade.
His visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland from 5:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and until service time at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday.
