FLORENCE-Well, it’s been awhile since we’ve had any news to share. Covid-19 has been rough on the entertainment industry as a whole but we are surviving for now thanks to the support of our patrons. We can’t thank you all enough for supporting us and putting us in a position to weather the coronoavirus storm for this long. With that said, there are a few upcoming opportunities to continue supporting the Shoals Theatre that we would like to let you know about.
United We Laugh
Yakov Smirnoff is a Russian Immigrant who loves America and being American. “UNITED WE LAUGH” is a comedy special brought to you by Yakov that will leave you in stitches laughing and shedding a tear at the same time. After enjoying this 75 min journey, Yakov will have everyone Laughing United.
Artist Yakov Smirnoff
Yakov Smirnoff is a legend in American comedy. After escaping communist Soviet Russia in the 1970’s, he came to this country with nothing but a dream. Not even knowing the language, Yakov humbly began working as a bartender at the famous Grossinger’s Catskill Resort in New York, where he was able to tell jokes each night after his shifts. As his English improved,he quickly grew in popularity. He would then make the move to Los Angeles where the owner of The Comedy Store, Mitzi Shore, took him under her wing. His lovable view of life through the eyes of a poor immigrant captured the hearts of America. He soared to the top of the comedy world performing on”The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and countless other television programs, including as a regular character on “Night Court” and the star of his very own show, named after his famous catch-phrase, “What a Country!” He branched out to the big screen where he starred in movies with Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, and Jack Nicholson to name a few. Yakov Smirnoff is an iconic comedian, movie star, best-selling author and most recently, he has earned a doctorate degree in Leadership from Pepperdine University. Living a life that’s as exciting as ever, Yakov has married his sweetheart, is currently touring the world doing stand-up, and even has his very own theater in Branson, Missouri. With the heart of a dreamer, Yakov Smirnoff has made the impossible possible and continues to inspire others with his message that America is still “What a Country!”Keep an eye out for his brand new podcast on ABC radio, look for him at a theater near you, and stay tuned for what Dr. Yakov does next!

This show will be streamed/premiered live at 7pm on September 1st via the Shoals Community Theatre’s Website, Facebook Page, and YouTube Channel. The video will be available to go back and watch from the beginning around an hour after it ends on the 1st. This same night, we will also be lighting the Theatre in Red to show solidarity with #RedAlertRESTART. Red Alert Restart is a movement among entertainment industry professional and venues to raise awareness for the RESTART Act that is currently stalled in congress. If passed, the RESTART act will help with funding for entertainment professionals who receive 1099’s as well as venues who are forced to remain closed due to pandemic restrictions. Along this same line, we urge you to join us in showing support for the #saveourstages movement sponsored by the National Independent Venue Association. That link can be found here:
