FLORENCE – This week, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, some very talented surgeons got together to help raise awareness on the issues that deal with reconstructive surgery after mastectomies.
The event was held Wednesday at the Shoals Chamber of Commerce. The program was led by plastic surgeon Dr. Russell Jennings.
In addition to Jennings, Shoals area Surgeons, Dr. Bob Bailey and Dr. Wes Desselle were on hand to help illustrate the new technologies and procedures for breast cancer patients.
“It’s important for women to have this kind of forum to hear from patients as well as physicians,” Jennings said. “Breast reconstruction surgery really does help women regain that sense of self that might have been compromised during the treatment phase of breast cancer.”
BRA Day is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness, and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. It occurs annually in October and is a collaborative effort between the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Plastic Surgery Foundation, plastic surgeons, breast centers, nurse navigators, corporate sponsors, and breast cancer support groups.
