Shoals Crisis Center receives grant to help prevent assaults at college campuses

rrMONTGOMERY— A program dedicated to preventing sexual assault at colleges in northwest Alabama will continue educating students and assisting victims with the help of a grant awarded by Governor Robert Bentley.

A $22,000 grant will support Shoals Crisis Center’s educational programs aimed at preventing rape and sexual assault on college campuses. The program also mentors and trains volunteer advocates to recognize signs of assault and to assist victims.

“Safety is essential to fostering a positive learning environment on our college campuses,” Bentley said. “I commend the crisis center great seal alabamastaff and volunteers for their work to prevent assaults and support victims.”

The Crisis Center serves Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale and Marion counties with a 24-hour crisis line, trained volunteers and advocates who assist victims at local area hospitals and help with counseling and legal needs.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.

Bentley notified Angie Hamilton, the center’s board president, that the grant had been approved.
