Shirley Mae Sloan Verschoore passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024, in Huntsville, AL. Shirley was born on August 20, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa to Frisby and Alma Sloan. She grew up in Rock Island, Illinois graduating from Reynolds High School in 1955. She married Charles “Chuck” Patrick Verschoore in 1956. They moved to Huntsville in 1957. Raising five children, Chuck and Shirley were married for 62 years.

Shirley was a home maker always making sure her family was well taken care of and loved decorating and celebrating all holidays. She loved the beach, reading and spending time with family and friends. Shirley was a member of the Catholic Church and volunteered at multiple parishes in Huntsville.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Lizzie Baumbach, Barbara McGown, and Fred Sloan; and in-laws, Thomas and Barbara Verschoore, Frank Proske and Ernest Sampson. She is survived by children, Denise Satt (Jim), Michael Verschoore (Susan), Patrick Verschoore (Laura), JoLayne Frentzel (Micheal), and Rachael Samples (Stuart); sisters, Karon Sampson and Sharon Barry (Steve); brother, John Sloan; sister-in-law, Loretta Proske; brother-in-law, Forrie Baumbach; and many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family of Shirley would like to thank the staff at Fleming Farms Senior Living for their friendship, care and concern they provided for her. The family would also like to thank the staff at Huntsville Hospital and Hospice Family Care for their support. A private service for family and close friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Huntsville-Madison County Library Foundation or charity of your choice.
