Mrs. Morgan, who died Saturday, July 1, 2023, at her residence, was born June 12, 1933, in Pontiac, MI to Chester Milligan and Sarah Wininger Milligan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Rev. Harold A. Reed and Burl Morgan; brother, Howard Milligan; sisters, Irma Baker, Janet Olson, and Charlotte Howell; and grandson-in-law, John Mears.
Shirley met Harold Reed when he traveled to Michigan to work at Pontiac Motors in the 1950’s. They fell in love and married, having three boys. A few years later, they moved to Alabama, where Harold grew up, and began farming. Harold was also a Baptist minister with Shirley by his side. She played the piano for several years for the churches Harold led (New Center Baptist and Friendship Baptist). They also opened Reed’s Grocery, near Chalybeate and Hillsboro, running it for many years until Harold became ill, selling the business to his brother, Dyar Reed, who built the current location of Reed’s Grocery. Shirley also worked at Moulton Implement for years as the bookkeeper for Kent and Mr. Gilley.
After Harold’s passing, Shirley continued to enjoy her four grandchildren, doting over them. She met Burl Morgan, a long-time truck driver turned polled Hereford rancher. They married in the late 1990’s, and built Burl’s long-time dream home on his farm, where they raised quality Herefords until Burl’s death in 2020. Shirley’s eldest son, Larry, had assisted them over the last few years with the operation, and continues to run the operation to date.
She is survived by her three sons, Larry Reed, Gary Reed (Gloria), and Brian Reed (Vickie); two brothers, Robert Milligan (Mavis) and Don Milligan; four grandchildren, Miranda Reed (Luke Barnes), Bridget Reed Mears, Rachel Reed, and Tyler Reed; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
She lived a lot of life in her short 90 years on this earth, but she has begun her eternal life alongside of all her departed family and friends. Until we meet again.
