Shelby Joe was the son of the late Jodie Jasper and Mary Frances Knowles Mauney. He received his education from Pine Grove High School. Shelby Joe was a retired city bus driver for Memphis Area Transit Authority, where he was known as the “bus rodeo champion” and had won so many times that his coworkers would yell out “Here comes Moon Dog. It’s over!!!” He loved to play dominoes during his split shift at work and was one-time featured in the Memphis newspaper enjoying a game with his coworkers.
Shelby Joe was often told he looked like Elvis, especially in the Memphis area, and once even had several teenagers chasing his city bus and screaming out Elvis’ name. Shelby Joe loved old cars and tractors. He had a gift for gardening and was known to raise the best cantaloupes around. He thoroughly enjoyed playing cards with his brothers and sisters and friends. He also loved to hear Gerald Price play the guitar and sing. More than anything, Shelby Joe had a tremendous love for family and treasured his memories of time spent with his many siblings and parents, as well as his children and grandchildren. Oftentimes, during his illness, he would reminisce for hours and laugh affectionately as he recalled many happy days and funny experiences. These memories brought him much joy in his later years.
He is survived by two sisters, Edith Ridge and Evelyn Jackson Winstead, two brothers, Bonnie Mauney (Sandra Kay), and Guy Mauney, a host of nieces and nephews, his son Shelby Joe Mauney, Jr, his two daughters, Angela Hawkins (Joe) and Amanda “Nae Nae” Johnson (Michael), 5 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, 3 great-grandsons, and 3 great-granddaughters (including one due in August).
He is preceded in death by his wife of 16 years (and mother to his children), Catherine Marie Hoskins, one son, Eddy Williams, one grandson, Brady Hawkins, his father, Jodie Jasper Mauney, his mother, Mary Frances Mauney, and four brothers, Rudolph Mauney, Gene “Base” Mauney, Lewis Mauney and Arthur Mauney.
