SHEFFIELD – They will not disclose which run-down commercial property they’re talking about. But sources inside City Government say that if the property owner can get some financial cooperation for an appraisal (so he can get some tax benefits), he will deed the building to Sheffield.
At first blush, that doesn’t seem like such a great offer. But when one looks at the offer more closely, it begins to make more sense. According to our source, “Here’s the situation: This building has over the years become another example of a blighted property in an otherwise fine commercial area.” The source continued, “If we can take ownership of the property like we did with the building next to the Public Library… Well, we can offer it to developers for improvement.”
The source said that Sheffield’s Downtown District which, for decades, has languished due to changing business trends, is now in the process of a great turnaround. The first new structure in Downtown in over 40 years is nearing completion. A number of old brick structures that have been neglected for decades have been transformed to beautiful storefronts and rental units. And the source says there is much more to come for the District.
This newly announced property, although not in the Downtown District, once transferred to a developer and improved will further enhance the overall appearance of the City.
It looks like the City Council is going to approve this expenditure of about $1,500 to get the ball rolling.
