SHEFFIELD – If mayor Ian Sanford has his way, Sheffield will gain a new source of much-needed tax revenue. His initiative is to hold yet another vote on alcohol sales inside the city limits on Sundays. Presently, there are no Sunday alcohol sales this side of Huntsville and Sanford says, “Why not?”
There will be a vote on the initiative at Monday’s regularly scheduled Council meeting.
Sanford told the Council at a special called-meeting last week that “We should have a vote. After the vote, we will know once and for all.”
The last time a vote on off-premises sales was held was 2005. The referendum was conducted under the Mayoral term of Billy Don Anderson. The referendum failed, but only by a relatively few votes.
This time, Sanford thinks it will be different.
