athens-utilties-logo-e00b55deefda9eefATHENS-Athens Utilities has learned that scammers are contacting our customers in an attempt to obtain personal information.

Scammers are posing as the “Athens Electric Department” and are phoning customers seeking credit card information. The callers tell the customer to prepay for electric service now so the customer will not be impacted by any potential rate increases in the future.

“Please do not share your personal information if you are contacted,” Athens Utilities Customer Relations Manager Amy Golden said. “Athens Utilities does not call our customers and ask for credit card information.”

The most recent number the scammers are using is 708-300-9971.

Customers can call Athens Utilities at 256-232-1440 anytime there is a question about billing or service.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said anyone who gave personal information about debit or credit cards should cancel them immediately. Those who gave personal information should also monitor credit reports and accounts for suspicious activity.

“If someone gave out personal information and falls victim to identity theft, the victim needs to notify our office,”
Johnson said.

Anyone who is a victim of identity theft can contact Athens Police at 256-233-8700.
