Sarah Ruth Melton, age 98, peacefully passed to heaven from Cloverdale Nursing Home in Scottsboro, AL, on April 6, 2024. Ruth was born on June 7, 1925, in Huntsville, Alabama. She graduated from Joe Bradley High School in Huntsville in 1942 – she was the first of her family to graduate from high school. In her mid-twenties, she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a bookkeeper in a real estate office. When she retired in 1987, she moved to Scottsboro, Alabama. Ruth was an animal lover and cared for numerous feral cats for many years. She also enjoyed playing Bingo at the Scottsboro/Jackson County Senior Center where she met many friends. When she was home, you could find her cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the Auburn Tigers.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents – George and Gladys Melton, her stepmother – Josie Anderson Melton, her three sisters – Georgia Mae Melton, Joyce Melton Powell and Betty Melton Holloway, and her son-in-law – Merriel Eugene Chaney.
Rush is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Melton Chaney – Scottsboro, Alabama, one grandson, Jeffery Eugene Chaney (Melinda) – Trenton, Georgia, one granddaughter, Tangela Chaney Holland (Jamie), three great grandsons, Halen Tate Chaney, Rock Cadence Chaney, and Axl Crue Chaney – Trenton, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Cedar Hill Cemetery on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 2p.m. The family wishes to express their appreciation for all the love and support, especially Priscilla’s best friends, Kathy Jeffery and Heidi Holt, and a special thank you to Cloverdale Nursing Home and Aveanna Hospice Care.
