Sarah Alice Wolfskill (née Mathis) died Saturday morning after an extended illness. She was 78. Born in Hattiesburg, MS, attended school in Boaz, and was Miss Etowah County High School when she graduated as salutatorian with an almost perfect GPA. She was chosen to play the piano for the graduation.
She continued her academic career at Howard College, now Sanford University, graduating with cum laude high grade honors with a double major and a teacher’s certificate in English and Spanish. She was elected all four of her years at Howard to serve on The Student Government Association, and was honored to be chosen to the 1962 edition of Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities.
She married Gary Wolfskill in August of that year, and delivered two beautiful daughters, Rhonda and Sonya, in 1966 and 1968. Sarah taught public school music in Phil Campbell, and the family followed her in moving to Haleyville, where she played the organ at the First Methodist Church for 23 years, and taught Spanish at Haleyville High School for almost as long. Upon retirement, Sarah, and her husband of over 56 years, moved to a river-side house (that Sarah remodeled) on Wheeler Lake, near Rogersville where’s the Tennessee River runs by.
Sarah will be remembered by family, colleagues, students and friends for her beauty, charm, vivaciousness and dedication in all of her endeavors. But more importantly, she was the foundation of our Wolfskill family, its home life, church, travels and kinship relationships.
Friends are invited to pay their respects to Sarah on Wednesday, May 22nd from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at Rogersville Funeral Home.
Wow! Sarah will be sorely missed!
