Sandra Jennings Mitchell, 81, a resident of El Reposo Nursing Home, located near Florence, Alabama, passed away on June 24, 2024, after a long struggle with dementia and other ailments.

Sandra was born in Decatur, Alabama on August 22, 1942. She graduated from Cotaco High School and went on to attend Birmingham-Southern College, earning a degree in Business Management.

After college Sandra worked for several companies in Huntsville, Alabama including GTE where she served in quality control. After leaving GTE, she worked for many years as a department manager for Belk’s in Huntsville.

On February 19, 1965 she married Lester Gene Mitchell at Valhermoso Springs Christian Church in Valhermoso Springs, Alabama. Both Sandra and Mitch were active in the church for many years. Sandra and Mitch were married for more than 58 years and have one daughter, Sandra Mitchell-Mewbourn of Florence, Alabama.

Sandra enjoyed traveling with her husband and daughter, visiting nearly every state in the continental United States. She also enjoyed reading, painting, and spending time with her cats, of which she had many over the years.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents Coleman Carlile Jennings, mother Lillian Compton-Jennings, and her husband Lester Gene Mitchell. She is survived by her daughter Sonya Mitchell-Mewbourn, grandson Gabriel C. Stegmaier, son-in-law Greg Mewbourn, and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted by Greenview Funeral Home, with a brief visitation at Valhermoso Springs Church followed by a graveside service at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
