Tim was born in Mullins, SC and grew up in Florence, SC. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC; a Master of Science Degree in Guidance from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama and doctoral credits in Education Administration from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.

After serving two years as an officer in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps, Tim worked as a teacher and counselor at the high school and community college levels. He began his Federal civilian career in 1975, as an Equal Employment Opportunity Officer at the U.S. Army Foreign Science and Technology Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. During his career, he served as a senior leader in each of the Human Resources management functional areas. Tim held positions with the U.S. Army Material Command, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army Forces Command, Total Army Personnel Command and Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

Tim’s career took him to NC, GA, PA, MD, and twice to VA and AL. He impacted many lives and shaped many careers as a leader, mentor, and coach. Most notably, he served as the G1, Director of Human Resources and the Director for the Personnel and Training at AMCOM, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He served as the Deputy Director, Civilian Personnel Operations Center Management Agency (CPOCMA), Aberdeen, Maryland and as the Academic Dean and Director of the U.S. Army Center for Civilian Human Resources Management in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The center developed and implemented civilian human resource management training for both military and civilian leaders and for the civilian human resource management professional workforce.

Just prior to his retirement in December 2011, Tim served as Deputy Chief of Staff, G1, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, U.S. Army Contracting Command (ACC), providing “real time” advice and assistance to the Command Executive Director and managers on all Human Resources matters.

Tim was the recipient of the Army’s highest civilian award, the Department of the Army Exceptional Civilian Service Award, and four of the Army’s second highest civilian awards, the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

Tim was an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Huntsville. His hobbies included collecting and using unique tools, gardening, reading, listening to jazz and 50’s/60’s music and traveling to oddball places.

Tim was married for 55 years to the former Lois Michelle Holewinski. They were married in 1968 in the former WAC Chapel, Ft. McClellan, Alabama where Lois served as a U.S. Army WAC Officer.

Tim is predeceased by his parents Lillian and John C. Grey, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Lois; son and daughter-in-law Sean and Aimee Grey; granddaughters Lauryn and Stephanie Grey; two sisters Kaye Abramson and Claire Dobinski (Bill) and nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Huntsville with Rev. Brett Gudeman officiating followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hudson Alpha Foundation, Memory and Mobility Program, 601 Genome Way, Huntsville, Alabama 35806-2908.
