Samuel Arthur “Sam” Smith, age 76 of Florence, died Monday, December 21, 2015. His family will receive friends Saturday, December 26, 2015, 6-9 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Central Heights. His funeral service will be Sunday, 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with burial in Central Heights Community Cemetery. Garey Beck and David Dowdy will officiate.
Mr. Smith employed with Southern Tire Co of Sheffield and Dodge Manufacturing, of Mishawaka, IN where he retired after thirty two and half years. He served as president of DA. He then moved to Alabama in 1999. He loved sports, especially football and enjoyed yard work. Preceding him in death were his parents, Oscar and Edna Smith Murphy, step dad, Ciller Murphy, brother, Noah “Sonny” Smith, sisters, Meredith Huffman and Anna Lavolyn Smith.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years; Margaret L. Smith, daughters; Wanda Kramer (Kenneth), Sandra Dowdy (Mike), brother; Bimel Smith (Marie) sisters; Louise Russel (Paul), Shelby Norris (Chuck), Peggy Gentry (Billy), Sue Overholser (Larry), grandchildren; Adrian Clayton (Larissa), Jeremy Dowdy (Emily), Chelsea Carey (Jason) Brittney Dowdy, Marcus Clayton (Sheena), great-grandchildren, Anna Claire Dowdy, Kilee Reane Dowdy, Sophia Reene Clayton, Chase Imre Vicen, Charley Allen Clayton, Halle Reese Clayton, Sara Michelle Dowdy, James Carey and Lorilie Carey and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Adrian Clayton, Marcus Clayton, Jeremy Dowdy, Joseph Gentry, Danny Wright and Kerry Wright.
Honorary pallbearers are Larry and Michael Brown, Chase Vicen, Charlie Clayton and James Carey.
The family expresses special thanks to the Nurses and Staff of ECM 5th floor for their help during this difficult time especially Jody of Amedisys Home Health.
