Sam W. Smith, Jr. passed away in Crestwood Hospital, Huntsville, Alabama on January 5, 2025.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Schrimsher Smith; son, Wes Smith and wife, Carla, of Thomaston, Georgia; grandsons, Tyler Smith and wife, Kasey, and Hunter Smith and wife, Emily, of Georgia; great-grandsons, Peyton and Henry Smith, of Georgia; niece, Sharron Calvert and husband, Steve, of New Market, Alabama; and nephew-in-law, Richard Tanley of New Market, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam W. Smith, Sr. and Bess Smith, as well as a sister, Nell Smith Lawler and husband, Leo, and a niece, Lydia Lawler Tanley.
Sam farmed the family farm of Winchester Road in Huntsville, Alabama until it was sold and developed into Henson Hills Subdivision in the 1980s through 2012.
Sam and Betty moved to an apartment complex off Whitesburg Drive in Huntsville in May of 2012, and enjoyed a comfortable, happy life there until his death.
Sam was a long-time member of Holmes Street United Methodist Church of Huntsville.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home with the funeral immediately following in the chapel. Sam will be buried in the plot with his parents in Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holmes Street United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
